Plan My Cartagena Trip

Where you stay in Cartagena changes the whole trip.

The city is not very large, but each area feels different. The best choice depends on whether you want to walk to restaurants and nightlife, stay somewhere quieter, have more space, or be closer to marinas and modern apartments.

For most first-time visitors, these are the areas worth considering.

Walled City / Centro Histórico

The Walled City is the easiest choice for a first trip to Cartagena.

You can walk to many restaurants, plazas, bars, rooftops and historic sites, which means you spend less time in traffic and more time enjoying the city.

It works especially well for couples, short stays and travelers who want Cartagena's historic atmosphere right outside the door.

The main tradeoff is that properties inside the old city can be smaller, and busy streets can be noisy depending on the exact location.

Best for:

  • First-time visitors
  • Couples
  • Food and nightlife
  • Short stays
  • Travelers who want to walk most of the time

Getsemaní

Getsemaní is lively, colorful and more casual than the Walled City.

It has restaurants, bars, street art and strong nightlife around Plaza de la Trinidad. You are still close enough to walk into Centro, so the location is very convenient.

I recommend it for travelers who like energy and do not mind a busier atmosphere.

If you want quiet evenings and more privacy, another area may fit better.

Best for:

  • Younger travelers
  • Groups of friends
  • Nightlife
  • Travelers who prefer a more active neighborhood

Bocagrande

Bocagrande is the modern side of Cartagena.

You will find high-rise hotels, apartments, shops, restaurants and easy access to the waterfront. It is practical for groups that want larger apartments or modern buildings with pools and more services.

You will normally need transportation to the Walled City, although the drive is short when traffic is light.

The beach is convenient, but most travelers looking for the clearest Caribbean water should plan a boat day to the Rosario Islands instead.

Best for:

  • Families
  • Groups
  • Modern apartments
  • Longer stays
  • Travelers who want convenience

Castillogrande

Castillogrande is quieter and more residential than Bocagrande.

It is one of the better choices for travelers who want privacy, waterfront views and a calmer place to return to after being in the city.

There are fewer restaurants and nightlife options directly outside your door, so private transportation or taxis are more useful.

For high-end family trips and private groups, Castillogrande can be a very comfortable base.

Best for:

  • Families
  • Couples
  • Private groups
  • Travelers who prefer quiet and privacy
  • Longer stays

Manga

Manga is a residential area close to several marinas and not far from the Historic Center.

It is useful if your trip includes multiple boat days or if you prefer a calmer neighborhood while still staying relatively central.

It does not have the same tourist atmosphere as Centro or Getsemaní, but that can be a positive if you want a more residential setting.

Best for:

  • Boat-focused trips
  • Longer stays
  • Travelers who want a quieter area
  • Groups using private transportation

Which Area Is Best for a Bachelor or Group Trip?

For groups, the decision usually comes down to convenience versus space.

If nightlife and restaurants are the main priority, staying in or close to the Walled City is very convenient.

If the group wants a larger apartment, pool, more privacy or easier access for private transportation, Bocagrande or Castillogrande can make more sense.

For larger groups, I recommend choosing the property first and then checking how the location works with the rest of the itinerary.

Which Area Is Best for Couples?

For a first romantic trip, I would normally choose the Walled City.

You can walk to dinner, enjoy the architecture and stay close to most of the places you will want to visit at night.

Castillogrande is a better choice if you prefer a quieter waterfront stay and do not mind using transportation more often.

Which Area Is Best for Families?

Bocagrande and Castillogrande are usually the easiest options for families that want space, modern buildings and pools.

The Walled City can also work very well, especially for shorter stays, but the exact property matters more because room size, stairs and street noise vary a lot.

What If You Are Planning Yacht Days?

Do not choose your hotel only based on the marina.

Cartagena is compact enough that transportation to the departure point is normally easy to arrange. The marina depends on the specific yacht, so staying in Manga does not automatically mean every boat leaves nearby.

If a boat day is one of your priorities, read our Cartagena Yacht Rental & Rosario Islands Guide.

Our Recommendation

For a first trip, choose the Walled City if you want the easiest overall experience.

Choose Bocagrande if you want modern buildings and convenience. Choose Castillogrande if privacy and quiet are more important. Choose Getsemaní if you want nightlife and energy. Choose Manga if you prefer a residential feel and expect to spend time around the marinas.

The best area is the one that makes the rest of your plans easier.
